  • Alarms are mandatory now on radon systems
Alarms are just a bad idea. I have seen no valid argument for increasing costs and adding potential headaches for customers and migrators. Increased costs, decrease participation....that is the reality.
  • Cringe of the Day
This is why ALL systems should have a RMT number on it. Glad the problem was corrected.
  • DoD Report Details Systemic Deficiencies with Management of Radon in Military Housing
"Radon is the most significant environmental health risk present in GO-GC military housing."

This statement is just fine as it is. I have 400 years of data to confirm the risks are pretty high if conditions are right.

I would say that the consistent public awareness is not really there. Placing more fees onto systems decreases participation. Needless to say...Minnesota is getting what their government has produced from mismanagement and greed. There are better solutions than fees. Step #1 would be to ensure that ALL radon systems have RMT numbers associated with them. That would solve alot of problems. States need to look at different approaches for different areas. The pics Wally posts are very frustrating. Evidence of why you do not go with the lowest price.
  • Minnesota Radon Rules
Most of the bad systems I have seen do not have RMT numbers on them. When ever you buy a service there is a way to contact folks in the event of a problem. Many of these bad systems were installed by a family member or a "friend" looking to give someone a deal. Radon systems are pretty basic in nature. The EPA puts out information on effectively notifying the community. If these recommendations were followed errors would decrease.

Dorsey Pic: I do not know what it looks like on the inside. If venting is the only error then the system still works. May get entrainment during summer months but i bet those windows are closed 99.9% of the time.

Mallon Second pic: I think this was a mitigator following up to activate a builders system. This is how plumbers put in systems. I would have them come back and cut a new hole in the roof and repair the old hole. Another perfect example of why you need RMT numbers on all systems installed!!

All of the examples shown are obvious examples where homeowners has no idea what a radon mitigation system looks like. I also do not see manometers or RMT numbers anywhere!!!

Start with the basics FIRST before you start looking to the government for solutions. Thank yourselves boys and local municipal folks for lack of education!! We have a serious lack of education here from the pictures posted above. Cry to Big Brother if you must but it is obvious...FOLKS ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOBS!!!

The government put sick people in nursing homes and you want to look to them for oversight? There are easy ways to decrease errors in the industry without extra taxes and fees. Please read the comments. Are you for increasing participation or decreasing it?
  • Minnesota radon policy
We need folks to call Minnesota and explain why this is bad for participation rates. The other state that does this is Illinois and they are a complete mess! I can just hear the comments now from customers...and during a "pandemic" too. Takes a real terrible group of people to excessively tax products and services that help peoples health. Denver did just get sued to correct the Corona virus death numbers. If the governors office will lie to the public about death rates....all the other offices will do the same thing.

It is sad that the homeowner actually paid for this. It only takes 10 minutes to get on the internet and see what a proper system looks like. What state was this?
  • Minnesota Radon Rules
I am being harassed ever since I made this post. About 3-4 calls a day. Unfortunately there are people on this list serve that only want to profit at the expense of the public's health. It is obvious that the federal government and state governments care nothing for the health of the community. Covid is a perfect example of that. Unnecessary expenses and costs on radon systems will reduce participation rates. If you work in the field you know exactly what I mean. Thank you Randy for your comment!

The whole point is that we are not here to fund a play account for some paper pusher. I have taken almost no profit on a few jobs just so the family could affords it. I replace fans for little cost so people get it done. I do service calls and never charge a thing if I don't have to do anything regardless if it is my system or not. I still have costs and live in the real world.

    Explain why?

    Any thoughts on this??

If you blow radon ourside, how does it come back into the house in high concentrations? It doesnt.
  • The Passing of Lorin Rollins Stieff
Rick, Very sorry for your loss. What an amazing story! Very thankful for his contributions and dedication.
  • Weatherization and Radon
Thank you Chrystine for posting the Fort Collins study. It is important to note that just because the passive systems were inspected does not mean that they were properly designed. The most important part of these passive systems is often done incorrectly due to budget constraints and unqualified installers. I regularly observe new homes in the early stages of construction and witness these mistakes to this day.
